A Safer Alberta for All: The Public Safety Blueprint
The Challenge We Face
No one should feel unsafe in their own community—but across Alberta, too many people do. After years of cuts to public safety funding and social services, crime has risen, and confidence in community safety has plummeted. Six in ten Albertans say crime is getting worse, and nearly one in four have been victims of crime in the past four years. Women, Indigenous communities, and rural residents have been particularly impacted.
The root causes of crime—poverty, lack of mental health support, addiction, and housing insecurity—have gone unaddressed, while critical frontline services have been stretched too thin to respond effectively. We need a plan that tackles these challenges with real solutions.
Why We Built This Blueprint
Over the past two years, Alberta’s New Democrats have consulted with families, businesses, law enforcement, and community organizations. We developed the Public Safety Blueprint to provide a clear, actionable path to a safer, stronger province. This is more than a policy document—it’s a commitment to real change.
Our plan takes a balanced approach, focusing on two key pillars:
Tackling crime head-on—by ensuring quick police response times, cracking down on repeat offenders, and strengthening the justice system.
Addressing the root causes of crime—through investment in mental health and addiction services, homelessness prevention, and community-based crime reduction programs.
A Path to Safer Communities
Albertans have told us what they want: safer public spaces, mental health-first crisis response teams, increased shelter spaces, and justice reforms that prevent repeat offenses. Our Public Safety Blueprint lays out the steps to make these goals a reality.
We will invest in services that reduce crime before it happens, expand support for victims, and work hand-in-hand with communities—including Indigenous leaders—to develop safety solutions that work for everyone.
Together, we can build a future where every Albertan feels safe in their home, their neighborhood, and their province.
This is our vision. This is our commitment.
Better is possible.
